Dr. Steven A. Thomasson was born in Fairbanks, Alaska, and grew up in Cleveland, OH. He completed his undergraduate studies at the Michigan State University, where he received a BS in Animal Science and then earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) in 1981. During veterinary school, Dr. Thomasson developed special interests in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Dermatology, and Preventative Medicine. He owned his first practice in New London, CT for 20 years, with 25 employees that included 4 veterinarians. In 2005, he sold his practice when the opportunity became available to move to the Scottsdale area where he became the owner of Cochise Animal Hospital.
In his spare time, he enjoys hiking, reading novels, astronomy, bridge and dancing. Dr. Thomasson currently resides in Cave Creek with his girlfriend Linda and their dogs, Aspen, a seven year old mixed Shepherd and Kona, a ten year old yellow Labrador.

Valerie Hammock joined Cochise Animal Hospital in February 2009 as one of our experienced technicians. She brings with her 10 years of experience in the veterinary field. In addition to her experience working with dogs and cats, she also has experience treating reptiles, rabbits, and most pocket pets. Valerie is originally from Grass Valley, CA and has always had animals around, from ponies to dogs and cats. She also worked at the Tampa Zoo for a year before relocating to the Phoenix area in 2007 with her family. She has a 28 year old daughter, Alishia, and lives with her husband Roy and 6 dogs, 4 that are rescued: "Otis", three year old Pug, "Allie", five year old English Bulldog, "Spike", six year old Pug, "Fiona", six year old Pug, "Baloo", three year old Chow, and "Aloo", twelve year old Pug. When Valerie is not tending to the patients at Cochise Animal Hospital, she enjoys working with the APARN (Pug) Rescue and also Helping Orphan Hounds Rescue, spending time with her family and her pets.

Yoshio Leon joined Cochise Animal Hospital in October 2009 as one of our experienced technicians. He brings with him 10 years of experience in the veterinary field. In addition to his experience working with dogs and cats, Yoshio also has experience treating some reptiles, rabbits, birds and most pocket pets. Yoshio is originally from Nogales, AZ and knew that he wanted to work with animals at a young age. He moved to the Phoenix area with his family in 2000. He enjoys raising his son Nick and caring for his 2 rescued pets: two year old blue Pit-bull "Balou" and seven year old mixed Shar Pei "Dino". When Yoshio is not tending to his patients at Cochise Animal Hospital, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends.

“Aspen” and “Kona” enjoy playing, tug of war, and squeaky toys. Kona enjoys swimming and being brushed. Aspen especially loves his green plastic football. They both enjoy running in the yard and chasing birds out of the trees and rabbits when they can find them. Aspen is 6 years old Shepherd mix and Kona is a 9 year old yellow Labrador. You will find them at the clinic most days and they always love to say “hi” and get a treat.

“Cali” enjoys sitting on top of the counter and rubbing everyone’s face and knocking pens out of your hand. She was a feral cat that was brought in and was adopted by Cochise Animal Hospital in 2006.

“Cooper” enjoys hanging out in his cage all day, and then roams the front of the clinic at night. He’s a little shy. He was a feral cat and brought into the clinic and was adopted by Cochise Animal Hospital in 2009. You may see him peering through the front window after hours.
