If you find a stray dog, please call the Grant County Sheriff’s
department at 608-723-2157.
They will either ask you to transport the animal to Lancaster Veterinary Clinic or will send an animal control officer out to get the dog. The county will, occasionally, subsidize stray cats, especially if they have an identifying collar or tag. Once the animal is brought to the clinic, the county will fund a week of housing. Lancaster Veterinary Clinic and WGLR 97.7 radio station work together to air weekly public service announcements. If there are enough animals in the pound, we send pictures and descriptions to the Herald Independent newspaper in Lancaster.

During their stay at Lancaster Veterinary Clinic, we get to know the animals well. We often times will call clients that we think the animal would match well with or contact clients who have recently lost a dog. After the animal has been at the vet clinic a week, we usually transport it to the Dubuque Iowa Humane Society in the hopes that a home will be found.
All puppies that are adopted through the Grant County Pound receive vaccinations including a broadspectrum vaccine that covers parvovirus, leptospirosis, distemper and a myriad of other viruses. They also receive a one year rabies vaccine, with tag and license number, and are neutered or spayed. These are all included in the cost of the adoption. If requested we do a heartworm check prior to all the vaccines and surgeries. We also scan all the dogs for microchips.

All animals are fed, watered and walked twice a day. They are given pads and blankets to relax on. The puppies we receive are given the broad spectrum vaccine immediately upon entry and all animals are scanned for microchips upon entry. Medical treatment and examinations are conducted if the animal is sick or injured.
Please call the Grant County Sheriff at 608-723-2157 if you have found a lost pet. Contact the Lancaster Veterinary Clinic if you would like to adopt a pet 608-723-6366. Feel free to stop at our office and see our current batch of loveable animals waiting for adoption.
